8 Reasons Why Marketing Is NOT For You

In my 10 + years in media and marketing in San Antonio, I often stumble across the funny person who inquires about my services and is simply not a good fit. I try to keep an open mind with all potential clients I come across and some don’t exactly come carrying the red flag. I have all too often taken on this type of client and regretted it soon after. This may or may not be you, either way, we can all learn from this.

While I have always preached marketing is a must have for any business or organization, it is a unique service that is a two-way street. I need you and you need me, but in order for any marketing strategy to work, your participation is imperative. Here is an analogy… You go to a doctor because you are feeling sick. You’ve done your research on their practice and they come highly recommended. They prescribe you some medicine and tell you simple instructions (cover your mouth when you sneeze, drink fluids, get rest, etc.) but for some reason you fail to do any of the things he/she recommended. What happens next? Do you blame the doctor because you didn’t feel better? Do you switch doctors? If you didn’t trust their judgment, why waste your time in their office? Same applies with marketing.

This Could Be You- And That’s Ok

Here are 8 tale-tell signs (in no particular order) that marketing isn’t for you:

1). You don’t have a clear vision for what you want

Without a vision, I can’t help you. What is the overall goal of your company? How do you measure your company is being profitable? What is your company mission statement? What do you want to see happen in the next 6 months? If you can’t answer any of these questions, marketing is out of the question.

2). You are cheap

There is no better way to explain this other than using the term “ You get what you pay for.”  So you know a guy who can make a logo for FREE do you? LOL I can’t count how many times someone has called me to say that they were unhappy with the last person they used for video, graphics, and web and that they paid little to nothing for their services. Hmmm… no brainer here. You want quality service? You need to pay quality prices, bottom line. You don’t tell the car dealership that you want a cheap, used car for pennies and expect the car to run smoothly, now do you?

4) You aren’t ready for success

Be ready for success means being willing to take risks and invest in something you have never done before. You have to be willing to put many things on the line. Successful people don’t make little moves, they go BIG. I recently posted a video on facebook explaining the visual of players at a poker table. You will never see the big players betting one chip at a time, they normally place big bets or go all in. That is exactly what you need to be doing! Do your research and take the leap! You won’t regret it.

 

5) You aren’t focused

In order for our marketing strategies to work, we need your attention and time. Not much, but at least 30% participation could make it work. This means answering emails, phone calls, text messages on a regular basis. If we have no communication, we make decisions without you and therefore can’t take the blame if you are unhappy with our choices. If growing your business is important to you, then you will surely take the time to participate in our plans for you. We promise it doesn’t take much effort.

 

6)  You aren’t open minded

While we love that we can be much like a traditional marketing/ad agency here in San Antonio, we also think outside of the box. This means doing things out of the norm that you may be uncomfortable with. For example, If I tell you that we need to research customer feedback, yet you don’t want to know what they said, how can we find out how to better serve your customers so they will come back? OR If I think you need a creative video to share your incredible story yet you refuse to get in front of the camera, how do you expect people to know who you are and do business with you? I could go on and on, but you get the point.

 

7) You can’t Take criticism- Your old logo that you drew yourself is near and dear to you, I get it. But what if we can enhance it or create something even better than you ever expected? Here’s another one, we took a survey on your customer service and the results came back terrible-don’t shoot the messenger! If anything, take that angry energy and pursue a great marketing strategy to solve the problem and make more money that way! If you don’t want to know the truth about what is happening in your business, you shouldn’t own a business period.
