Next Thursday kicks off our favorite San Anto’ event of the year — Fiesta San Antonio! One of the most unique Fiesta traditions traces back to 1946, when Fiesta royalty first handed commemorative coins to children at the river parades. The children wore the commemorative coins on ribbons around their necks to show them off, beginning the Fiesta medal craze for decades to come.

Nowadays, community groups, local companies, and high profile individuals create customized medals reflective of their organization, always jazzed with a colorful and festive twist. Die-hard medal collectors buy, sell and trade these pins every year and display their collections on satin sashes worn throughout the ten day celebration.
